Proof positive that sticking to long-term decisions is not my forte.
(Update June 2009) Lynn here. Partially for the purposes of planning a Tenipuri 2009/2010 Big Bang, partly because fandom squee is becoming more difficult on readerofasaph, assyrian is back in commission for the forseeable future. Your result for The Fan Fiction Personality Test... The MindgamerEverything is possible, nothing is ever really over. Fanfiction is a creative outlet for you. You don't intentionally write it, it just happens. You find inspiration in several fandoms, but are not obsessed with only one. You like to explore "what if" situations. What if this character had never made this very choice? What if this event had taken place sooner, never, elsewhere? What if these people had never met? You are likely to write Alternative Universes, fan seasons or sequels and just follow your (sometimes pretty strange) plot bunnies. Take The Fan Fiction Personality Test at OkCupid |

| intro to Gattaca |
[Dec. 30th, 2009|02:35 am] |
(because I had to do something besides read tabloid articles about Jude Law's love life, shaddup already)
Gattaca is a Hollywood movie that is also a serious SF film of ideas, oxymoronic as it sounds. I did watch Star Trek 2009 immediately after watching Gattaca, which thoroughly reminded me why I thought the concept oxymoronic.*
So in summary, Vincent (Ethan Hawke) is an Invalid, a natural-born child in a world where most babies have their genetic traits picked out at birth. In order to fulfil his dream of becoming an astronaut, he joins the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation under the genetic identity of Jerome Eugene Morrow (Jude Law), a member of the genetic elite who is now paraplegic after an unsuccessful suicide attempt. The ruse works; but a complication arises when the Missions Director of Gattaca is mysteriously murdered. Ensue mad genetic sampling and a cat-and-mouse game that is surprisingly dreary save for the bits when Jude Law appears onscreen. XD
Conclusions: ridiculously awesome premise, impressive worldbuilding, very shiny visuals, something oddly uncohesive about the plot/narrative direction, Jude Law acts circles around everyone else and is pretty much the perfect personification of a certain variant of fanon!Draco Malfoy. Overall it's an oddly ficcable film, although Hawke's and Thurman's performances fell really flat for me for some reason, despite their having really interesting (and underexplored) backstories. Most of the fic currently existing over at AO3 falls into the category of Eugene Morrow Angst - which is admittedly one of the easier and most natural kinds of fanfiction to write for the film.
*Star Trek 2009, oh man, what can I say than that I had been led to believe by various parties that it was a) very very good and b) very very homosocial. It turned out to be a decent movie, and perhaps might have passed as very very homosocial had I not just finished two viewings of Sherlock Holmes -- a film that scores about nine point two on a bromance scale wherein ST 09 falls somewhere between three and four. And I think the scale's logarithmic. |

| so, the Sherlock Holmes movie |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|07:24 pm] |
Point Number 1 YES MY G-MAIL ACCOUNT SENT SPAM TO LIKE EVERYONE IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE FOR SOME REASON. NO I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. T_T wah.
Point Number 2 For the interest of all, here are the official Victorian guidelines for verifying death:
Professional clinical judgement is required to make this determination and unique circumstances may warrant additional checks over and above the minimum guideline provided below. An ECG may be taken in addition to the minimum assessments if warranted.
• No palpable carotid pulse and • No heart sounds heard for 2 minutes and • No breath sounds heard for 2 minutes and • Fixed (non responsive to light) and dilated pupils and • No response to centralised stimulus (e.g. trapezius muscle squeeze, supraorbital pressure, mandibular pressure or the common sternal rub) and • No motor (withdrawal) response or facial grimace in response to painful stimulus (e.g. pinching inner aspect of the elbow) Optional •ECG strip shows no rhythm
Which brings me to Point Number 3.
DEAR DR. WATSON, YOU CANNOT CONFIRM MEDICO-LEGAL DEATH JUST BY NOTING THE ABSENCE OF A CAROTID PULSE, FOR GOODNESS' SAKE. I mean seriously, medicine can't have been THAT BAD in the late Victorian age.
At least check the pupils. *grumps*
So, now that I'm done with that, time for Point Number 4.
Anyone want to place bets on how many hundred percent the number of Holmes/Watson fics on the Internet will increase by in the next few months? Disclaimer: I have not read many of the original stories, and therefore care very little about the wholesale revamping of Watson's character design. (although seriously, given that Jude Law was in the role, the characterisation would have had to be much worse than it was for me to even start paying attention to its flaws)
At least two people I know have mentioned that they were worried that the movie was going to end up being about BLACK MAGIC AND THINGS, which kind of bemused me since, hullo, detective story here, invoking the supernatural goes against the very fundaments of the genre. Possibly it says something about how thoroughly fantastical modes have invaded Hollywood cinema; or possibly just something about how this particular movie fails to invoke the genre it's supposed to be in. The dialogue ranges from snarky to outright comic, and the action unexpectedly heavy; the plot itself isn't really a traditional mystery and in fact never rises above serviceable.
Despite all that, it hit nearly all of my kinks as far as movies go (Somewhat Logical Babble! Victorian Science! Unapologetically Anachronistic Characters! Completely Unresolved Character Arcs!). Also Downey Jr. is brill as Holmes -- I was paying more attention to him than to Jude Law, which really takes some doing -- and I loved the atmosphere in general; I'm already trying to coax my parents into going with me so I can watch it again.
Also, RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF BROMANCE. But I've mentioned that already. XD
Erm. So, anyone want to write me Sherlock Holmes fanfiction? Perhaps I should go read the actual short stories first.

| final Dice update |
[Dec. 20th, 2009|06:16 pm] |
Note for the people who are following Dice (admittedly that's about four people worldwide, feels like) that it's now finished (at least in first draft status, which given my work ethic is probably as close to final draft as it's ever going to get) over at LJ.
See previous posts re: 'Lynn HATES WRITING CLIMACTIC SCENES' before you scream at me about the lack of endingness of it all, although I realise that might not suffice as an apology. XD
*sigh* Suppose I should go work on my drive_a stuff now.

[Nov. 29th, 2009|12:04 am] |
(12:00:07 AM) jetsam: Founderfic is... interesting as a subsection of hp fandom (12:00:17 AM) readerofasaph: I've never read much, tbh. (12:00:25 AM) readerofasaph: mostly because I'm pretty attached to my particular vision of the founders. (12:00:33 AM) jetsam: most of it is bad, put it that way (12:00:39 AM) readerofasaph: if there's fic out there though (and I'm sure there is) (12:00:44 AM) readerofasaph: where Salazar and Godric are BFF. (12:00:49 AM) jetsam: I was looking for slytherin fic over the past few days, no real reason (12:00:49 AM) readerofasaph: who betray each other in horrible ways. (12:00:56 AM) readerofasaph: over Helga Hufflepuff. (12:01:00 AM) jetsam: someone was trying to put them in 1600 (12:01:01 AM) readerofasaph: *beams* (12:01:04 AM) readerofasaph: ...right (12:01:13 AM) readerofasaph: I think I was going to set them on Avalon. (12:01:39 AM) jetsam: others... it's very one big happy family. there's always a dark lord, always a malfoy ancestor (forgetting that mal foi is French, and they wouldn't be around for another hundred yeras) (12:01:43 AM) jetsam: lack of history (12:01:49 AM) jetsam: ...I'm a little picky (12:02:11 AM) readerofasaph: I would have thought the logical thing would be to fuse them with Arthurian legend. (12:02:12 AM) readerofasaph: tbh. (12:02:30 AM) jetsam: given the Excaliber similiarities? absolutely (12:02:42 AM) jetsam: sword of gryffindor indeed (12:02:42 AM) readerofasaph: ahahaha. (12:02:46 AM) readerofasaph: MERLIN/FOUNDERFIC CROSSOVER. (12:02:50 AM) readerofasaph: I DARE YOU. (12:02:53 AM) jetsam: XD (12:03:00 AM) jetsam: I spent most of 7 grumbling about the lame arthurian xover (12:03:01 AM) readerofasaph: *wheedles* (12:03:05 AM) jetsam: hmmm (12:03:06 AM) jetsam: maybe (12:03:18 AM) jetsam: I've only watched a couple of episodes of merlin
In other news, my birthday is over. I am going to continue doing homework and bemoan being old and hoary at the age of 23. |

Right. I couldn't finish this for the last round of khr_undercover, and I didn't finish it for this round. Somebody take it off my hands right now and think of a plot for it. Sad to say, I didn't have very many goals for this fic beyond the opportunity to write Yamamoto running through dense undergrowth on a moonless night while wearing bloody, ripped jeans.
...although I haven't managed to write that either. A thorough failure.
Gokudera is OOC, but we'll ignore that; it's nigh-on impossible for him to be IC and still remain a tolerable human being.

because I have wanted to see this my whole life. (okay only for the last forty-eight hours. BUT ANYWAY.)
Ko Yeong-ha always means what he says and never what he implies. Taeseon never means what he says and controls his implications to the fullest; the purest of intentions. Somehow, regardless, they are friends; or at least as friendly as two people can be with opposite definitions of the truth.

[12:45] readerofasaph: I really want to see fanart of Waya as a big mother hen. [12:45] readerofasaph: with yellow Isumi-chick under one wing. [12:45] shiorikazen: HAHAHA [12:45] readerofasaph: and yellow Shindou-chick squished under the other wing. [12:45] readerofasaph: while at the same time Waya reaches out to pull on the tail of Ochi-chick. [12:45] readerofasaph: who is trying to wriggle away into the corner to sulk. [12:45] shiorikazen: STOPIT. THE IMAGE

Urrgh I really wish I could go help lindra and shiorikazen host the drive_a chats but arrrgh I have to go to work wai wai.
Also, nobody wants to know how much time I have spent in the last week attempting to dissect individual manga panels of Ko Yeongha. Horrendously this feels like Kirihara redux. (Horrendous because both Kirihara and Draco Malfoy always did have awful habits of EATING MY BRAIN all the time without ever producing anything like a plot bunny. |

I have had enough sleep for two nights in a row it is amazing how much better that makes one feel about the world at large.
Certain blinded fic challenge things:
Defaulted out of hng_deathmatch in Round 2 due to many and various reasons. Round 1 fic is now up at the fic journal: by the light of fireflies and snow
[I keep saying I'll crosspost fic links to this journal but I never actually manage to remember to do this! Quick catch-up on the stuff I've posted since moving to DW (there's really not a lot):
(tenipuri) irresistible force paradox, ficlet, AU, Atobe, Ryoma, Puss in Boots - fairy tale retelling, 3000 words, Mizuki, Yuuta Prognosis - Yagyuu/Oshitari/Niou, SF AU, 6000 words. (hikago) Dice, in a Game of War - Ch. 1, Waya, Touya, noir/fantasy AU, (hxh) all children grow up, drabble, Killua, Isumi. ]
Guessing for khr_undercover: if you have any idea which fic I wrote, feel free to leave a guess here together with a choice of prompts, and I suppose I'll write a drabble for people who guess correctly (I suppose because you know what I am like with drabble IOUs really). My only guessing hint: I didn't really have a lot of time to write last week, and the length and style (or lack of rather) both reflect that. |

[Jul. 28th, 2009|09:39 pm] |
hng_deathmatch: entries for the first round of are up here, so head over there and vote on the outcome of the matches if you feel like it! At least half of the matches are very, very close in the polling atm, so your vote will definitely count. shiai vs speranze clearly the Epic Showdown of the round.
Prompts Meme for the Tenipuri Big Bang are up at drive_a, both on Dreamwidth and Livejournal, for anyone who has good ideas for 20K fics and wants to give them away, or anyone who wants to write a 20K fic and has no ideas!
The canon scouting/support thread will probably open next week, followed by a general. lindra will be organising monthly chats in multiple timezones soonish.
IRL it's a bit of a busy week; classes have started and I'm working four days this week on top of that (plus have got to get khr_undercover fics sorted), so if anyone sends me an e-mail/PM/message of any other kind and does not hear back within a few days, please contact me again; it is possible that I simply forgot at all about it.

readerofasaph (9:55:15 PM): *finishes Hikago 18, frowns at her thoughts*
readerofasaph (9:55:31 PM): for some reason my Hikago fic has always been a kind of - way to grapple with the series.
readerofasaph (9:55:37 PM): with varying degrees of success.
lindra(10:13:59 PM): hmm.
lindra(10:16:16 PM): I think the view the series takes is so overarching, so endlessly repetitive, with many implied and explicit variations on a theme, that to concentrate on a particular individual, a particular segment of set of people at a point in time, to say this is about /them/, not about /this/, they are the people-playing, not the it-being-played by them, is to work against the series. it foregrounds what is left to end as a part of an insubstantial whole.
lindra(10:16:32 PM): which is why I find fic with a sort of dreamy, contemplative tone to be, sometimes, missing the point.

A House Divided is, I think, set to be a KHR fandom classic when lysapadin finally unleashes it on the public; I can hardly wait for it to be finished. (If nothing else it will make my list of KHR fandom classics.)
My khr_undercover fic is 1000 words so far, and probably a bit of a conceptual mess - if I could think of a way to make it work without so many disparate elements I would but on the other hand I wouldn't, more fun to cram all the random cool ideas in. My guessing hint for this round: weirdly incomprehensible thing with confusing setup and complete lack of resolution.

| drabble request |
[Jul. 17th, 2009|08:28 pm] |
so. I have to write for khr_undercover. I have to write for bedtimepuri. I have to get started, help me please, on my big bang fic for drive_a. And all my brain is offering me is a swordfight between Ogata and Hikaru.
I know I owe people a lot of drabbles for a lot of prompts, but they are all lost in the murky depths of my LJ. Give me new ideas! New prompts! Hopefully they will kickstart my creative energy! If not then maybe I will at least write you a one-sentence fic!
And erm, Tenipuri and KHR prompts particularly urgent, but feel free to request anything in any fandom you think I may know.
Also attn: Australian and NZ anime fans, the Sydney Anime and Manga Show is running a fanfiction competition, details here. The deadline is in like 26 hours, but hey, it's Saturday! Anyone can write 2000 words in a single Saturday quite easily, right?
As an incentive or a disincentive, I am apparently one of the judges for this event. At least until the organisers realise the gaping holes in my anime knowledge. (Yu-Gi-Oh what? Sailor Moon what?)

[Jul. 16th, 2009|01:09 pm] |
sign-ups/information posts are now live at drive_a. (mirror comm at drive_a if anyone prefers to keep track via LJ; however sign-ups /must/ be done through the DW comm).
at the moment we're looking for artists, betas, and writers, as well as general volunteers. sign-ups are open until November 14th, which also happens to be our due date for rough drafts. (i.e. you can sign-up on the 14th provided you have 15 000 words of fic ready!)
(layout is not yet live. incidentally if anyone there is good at making icons and banners, I REALLY NEED TO TALK TO YOU. *tragicface* ) |

...and while I'm still writing up PoT big bang rules.
Xanxus is a sociopath. Discuss.
(Interestingly Hibari is not at all sociopathic, and Mukuro I think is pretending to be sociopathic rather than being the thing itself. Byakuran may qualify though; hopefully he doesn't secretly develop a woobie side in the end. Mukuro's (and Xanxus's) unexpected kindnesses always feel to me like Characterisation Failure rather than complex character development.) |
