...My head cold has transformed itself into an irritating, niggling, postnasal drip and I feel like doing nothing except pass out unconscious on the couch, but I just had to make a post to link to a drawing of Fuji in lace drawn by the lovely [personal profile] neumegami33, based on Femininity.

She's also done some lovely sketches of various characters in SoN, which I don't think I've remembered to link to in the past.

A Chinese translation of Chapter 1 of Dice, in a Game of War, thanks to the wonderful natsusora!

On a very-much-not-unrelated note, I really need to learn how to write better. -_- Or at least less pretentiously.

Yuletide [Dec. 26th, 2010|07:46 pm]
[Tags|]

First up, my present!

Two Palms, No Sound
Fandom: Minamishineyo (You're Beautiful)
Minyeo comes back to Seoul and isn't sure what to expect.

Basically gen (except for hints of Minam/Heyi, and well, the canon couple) and very sweet. A vignette wherein Minyeo comes back from Africa to see the band again.

I now wish I'd managed to scrape myself together enough to write something Hunter x Hunter for Yuletide Madness, although I mean, I don't write HxH fic so much as I write Killua, copiously, and most of the requests out there seemed to involve Kurapika.

As to the fic I wrote, I want to say I'll write gift fic for correct guesses, but everyone knows how that usually goes for me, haha, so hey, leave a a guess, together with prompt if you have a prompt, in any fandom you think/hope I'm familiar with, and if (and only if) the idea catches me I'll write it, regardless of the correctness of the guess.

Or well, leave a prompt without a guess, if you really want to.

Two clues/herrings:
1) It's in one of the fandoms I mentioned in the shortlist in this post. Now, some of these fandoms didn't make the final cut, and several others only have /one/ fic in this exchange, so well, the list of possibilities is not exactly long.
2) See earlier posts about exactly when I started writing my Yuletide fic and how much it sucks, which will give you a certain idea of length/(lack of) quality, etcetera. i.e. not very long, and not very well-executed.

Anything I really like will probably end up on AO3 bookmarks, although I haven't managed to read very many stories so far.

caught up on the hxh manga [Dec. 24th, 2010|07:16 am]
[Tags|]

...which I should have done months ago, but eh, I wasn't keen to land on another horrible cliffhanger, which is exactly what has happened, of course. First reaction: geez, the darkest arc in a fairly (very, arguably) shounen manga just got darker.

I'm starting to think my favourite thing about Togashi is that, that writer's instinct that says, 'I shouldn't go there, I may not be able to plot my way out of the ensuing bind'? DUDE DOES NOT HAVE IT.' The number of loose ends in the HxH manga have possibly reached four digits by now, but I wouldn't change a thing; it's just so ridiculously fun. The current arc, for instance; it's a mess, but what a glorious mess.

Incidentally, I've always had the notion that Killua, at some point in the future, will lose Gon (but retain his new sense of self*), by one means or another, and ch. 307 pretty much gave me a beautiful way to do it. *_*

okay, so clearly I am on holidays again [Dec. 11th, 2010|03:09 am]
[Tags|, ]

[community profile] khr_tournament is a sudden death tournament in which participants compete with fics/drabbles, icons, art, and other fanworks. Outcomes of matches are determined by popular vote. The winner proceeds to the next round until a tournament winner is decided.

Some of you may have participated in [info]hng_deathmatch, which was run on similar principles.

Because our holidays are (very, very) finite, we're limiting the inaugural tournament to sixteen participants. Tournament draw and dates to be announced when we have enough players.

Streets of Nippon updates, some day I'll have a better way to do this. also, recs [Nov. 21st, 2010|09:20 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Chapter 8 - actually posted this three weeks ago, but have been generally reluctant to announce it anywhere since it suffers from the usual Nothing Actually Happens syndrome.

He and You - sidefic featuring Sakaki, a much younger Atobe, and a reasonable number of OCs. Don't actually read this until you've read chapters (1 to) 8, it won't make any sense. This bit can be accused of floppy characterisation, atrocious pacing, awkward voice, lack of identity, and any number of other writing sins, but fortunately, Nothing Happening is not one of them.

A couple of miscellaneous fic recs, since I've actually managed to read some fanfic for the first time in months:

but we got rum - [info]ronsard
The inevitable crossover of PotC and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, wonderfully written.

thrall - [personal profile] tongari
A Mushishi ficlet; wonderfully atmospheric.

Stranger in a Strange Land - [personal profile] jetsam
Kabaji kid!fic. The voice in this is delightful, and this particular take on Kabaji and Atobe's move from England to Japan is especially endearing.

Not a fanfic, but this blog entry is an exquisite example of one of the reasons why I stalk m. john harrison.

fanfiction meme, gacked from aishuu [Nov. 19th, 2010|06:25 pm]
[Tags|, ]

I think it would be fun to talk about stories, but the usual memes are like, "What happens next?" "Tell me about Character A?" Which isn't so much talking about stories as it is writing more of a story. But you know how sometimes you read something and you're like, "I got ___ out of this story, I wonder if I have that right?" or "What on earth was ____ supposed to be?" and it's too awkward to ask the author? Now you could totally ask!

I've heard people say that writing is hard because you have to make decisions, but we never really talk about the decisions we make with stories or why we make them. We talk about plot bunnies, but not about how we actually turn them into a story.

And it seems like a lot more fun to do that than to do working.

So, if you wanted, ask me questions! (Or use this to ask your flist to ask you questions).

What were you trying to do [here]? Why did you decide to ____? This is what I thought about xyz, is that what you were going for? What made you write ____? Why did you decide to do this? And so on.

tbh I think the answers to many of these will be, 'I HAD A STORY PROBLEM AND I WAS A DUMB WRITER, I HAD ONLY TWO WAYS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND ONE OF THEM SUCKED.' XD

fanfiction meme, gacked from everyone [Nov. 8th, 2010|04:34 pm]
[Tags|]

basically, memes are more fun than modules on prescribing medication, and I wanted to show off the fact that I have finally actually uploaded anything to AO3.

1. Which is your favorite fic?
I have had to reread lots of stuff in order to upload it to the AO3 and therefore am in a haze of fond nostalgia for all my old work! In general I have a soft spot for the long!AUs like the entire Shin Tokyo continuity (Tenipuri) or Dice, in a Game of War (Hikago).

2. Which is your best-received fic?
In terms of comments, either Champions (Tenipuri) , Contrasting Colours, or Twenty Diversions (Hikago), although 20D excepted, I wouldn't classify any of these as my better work.

3. Which is your worst-received fic?
It's not my worst-received fic by a long shot (the other crazy AU would slaughter it in that department), but Dice is probably the only fic whose poor reception has ever actively put me in a long-term snit. (Admittedly, I was also in a snit about having to go back to medical school, so the issues may have been related).

4. Which is your angstiest fic?
The incomplete/abandoned Requiem for a Trio (Tenipuri) was originally meant to be rather angsty, although that's mostly the Yukimura factor. The aforementioned long AUs also tend to have reasonable quantities of unpleasant things happening to people.

5. Which is your funniest fic?
/rueful/ Would have to appeal to the dwircle for this one. Probably one of the Rikkai ones, although I I basically never write unalloyed humor; I suspect some of the more serious Tenipuri stories are actually funnier than the stuff like Femininity (Fuji, Yukimura) and Exercises in Team Bonding (general Rikkai), which are actually meant to be funny, or at least OTT.

(PS. There are probably (definitely) also fics of mine that are completely unintentionally hilarious.)

6. Smuttiest?
...er, I'm a fade-to-black kind of writer.

7. Fluffiest?
Puss in Boots (Tenipuri) is not the fluffiest, but the only one of any substantial length that is close to unmarred fluff. Alternately, Complications (Hikago), which remains one of the fics I'm fondest of after all this time.

8. Have you ever made someone cry with a fic?
Yes, according to at least one comment.

9. Which fic frustrates you the most?
Whatever fic I'm working on at the time. XD

10. Which fic was the most fun to write?
Probably Assimilation. (Tenipuri) Because, Marui! Marui! Marui! I also tend to dash off very wordy not-quite-angst ficlets featuring my favourite characters as a form of self-therapy when I'm feeling unhappy about my fanfiction, e.g. Kirikirikirikiri, Killua!, and Hibarihibarihibari

11. Who is your favorite OC you've ever created?
/considers/ Within fanfiction? Probably Mnemosyne Tonks, the OC sister to Tonks (and cousin to Draco) whom I made up for a Harry Potter story when I was in high school. Alternately, the Silver Emperor in the Shin Tokyo continuity, although he tends to be more interesting in my head than when transmitted into verbal form.

12. Are you better at oneshot or multipart?
...I think of this better in terms of wordcount range than in number of parts. In general I'm more polished when working at the <1000 range, simply by virtue of being more practiced at it. But I prefer broader scopes when it is possible, which more or less translates to longer stories, although I haven't finished many multiparters due to being an incredibly slow writer.

13. What character do you think you're the best at portraying?
It really does depend on whether you're using the character as a narrator or not, and how long you have with each character, but probably Marui Bunta. (Two or three years ago it might have been Kirihara, but the older I get the further away my natural writing voice gets from what you need to write Kirihara)

14. What character is the most difficult to portray?
Sanada Genichirou, no contest. (As far as I can tell he's also the most difficult for everyone else in the fandom.) Also everyone in KHR tends to be difficult to write at one point or another due to IRRECONCILABLE CANON. But there's a lot of things that go into making characterisation harder or easier; and I think it very much depends on what sort of story you're trying to write.

15. Tag five other authors!
Whoever wants to do the meme, consider yourself tagged. :D

recs, crawling through the AO3 [Nov. 8th, 2010|03:24 am]
[Tags|, , ]

In which the four companions encounter an old man in the forest - [personal profile] littlerhymes
Hikaru no Go
One-shot, Journey to the West AU. I adore this fic, it's just lovely. Despite traversing classic Hikago territory, there's a - freshness? - to this that's very winning.

Bloodsport - [personal profile] lysapadin, with minor chunks written by [personal profile] branchandroot and myself.
Katekyou Hitman Reborn
Longfic. Vampire AU, wherein Yamamoto's father is dead, Yamamoto is out for revenge, Gokudera is, for some odd reason, sane, and there are fight-scenes and fangs and general cazy.

(I am reccing the parts of this fic I didn't write, by the way, which is basically all of it except about two paragraphs, once you compare the edited versions.) XD
